What is saline?
Saline is a water-based solution containing sodium chloride,
an essential salt required by the human body, that is hospital-grade
in quality. This means that Amerigel® Saline Wound Wash
is free from contamination, bacteria and other potentially
harmful chemicals found in normal tap water.
Why not just use tap water?
Most health departments allow for certain amounts of bacteria,
additives like chlorine and fluoride, etc. that may slow
or impair the normal healing process. This can pose a problem
in chronic, non-healing wounds or in diabetic patients
who are already slow to heal.
Can I just make my own saltwater?
Concentrations of salt vary without exact measurements, so
many will get the water too rich in salt or not salty enough.
Can't I just clean the area with soap and water?
Soaps typically leave a residue or film if not adequately
rinsed off. Most shower walls and doors accumulate soap
scum, which is residue that builds up and must be cleaned
with household chemicals. This residue can contain various
forms of bacteria and fungus.
Why do we recommend using Saline?
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) issues
clinical practice guidelines for proper treatment recommendations.
AHRQ recommends using saline to cleanse the wound; therefore
we recommend its use, as well.
