Rosacea

Rosacea

Rosacea is the inflammation of cheeks, nose, chin, forehead or eyelids characterized by redness, spider-like blood vessels, swelling or bumps similar to acne (Acne Rosacea). Although rosacea can affect all segments of the population, individuals with fair skin who tend to flush or blush easily are believed to be at greatest risk. The condition is more frequently diagnosed in women, but more severe symptoms tend to be seen in men, perhaps because they often delay seeking medical help until the disorder reaches advanced stages.

While there is no cure for rosacea and the cause is unknown, medical therapy is available to control or reverse its signs and symptoms. People such as President Clinton, W.C. Fields and Princess Diana all had some form of rosacea. The most common appearance is the pink or red mask going from one cheek to the other and includes the bridge of the nose and chin. It becomes really prominent when you blush and then you may even feel a burning sensation much like wind burn.

Tips to Help Minimize Symptoms of Rosacea

  • A Skin Condition Known as Rosacea Requires Special Skin Care.  Sensitive skin involving the nose and cheeks that takes on a flushing appearance is known as rosacea.  Rosacea can evolve to impact the entire face depending on the subtype, progression and treatment.  Rosacea symptoms can involve visible blood vessels, a thickening of the skin, or be rash-like in appearance with bumps and pus-filled lesions.  Rosacea requires special skin care to reduce symptoms and halt progression of the condition.
  • Do not expose your skin to any potential irritants. Sensitive skin can become irritated by soaps, shampoos, skin cleansers, astringents, toners, cosmetics, perfumes and detergents, to name a few. Look for signs of skin irritation whenever trying a new product that comes into contact with sensitive skin.  Once the cause of the irritation has been identified, avoid further skin contact with this substance in the future.  It may be beneficial to keep a list of these products to avoid in the future.
  • Avoid other substances and conditions that can cause a skin reaction. Sensitive skin can also react to substances consumed such as wine and hot beverages or result from external conditions such as extreme temperature changes, either hot or cold.  Flare-ups can be caused by different substances for different people.  It is important to know what causes sensitive skin to flare-up and avoid these triggers.
  • Gentle Skin Cleansing.  Cleansing fragile skin gently can reduce the likelihood of further skin irritation.  Wash sensitive skin with lukewarm water.  Hot water can irritate fragile skin.  Choose cleansers that are alcohol and fragrance free.  Apply cleansers gently with the fingertips.  Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water by splashing water on the face.  Pat skin dry with an absorbent dry cotton towel.   Apply a therapeutic moisturizer such as Amerigel® Care Lotion immediately after cleansing as skin is most absorbent when wet.  Amerigel® Care Lotion penetrates the outer layer of skin to address conditions sub dermally, not just topically.  Do not let other substances come in contact with the skin until the skin is thoroughly dry which could take up to 20 to 30 minutes.  If a product continues to burn or sting after application, it is best to stop using it.
  • Skin Medication.  Apply medication before applying sunscreen or make-up.  Medication is more readily absorbed by wet skin.
  • Keep your skin moisturized.   Apply a therapeutic moisturizer such as Amerigel® Care Lotion right after cleansing the skin to help the skin retain its normal moisture.  Amerigel® Care Lotion can also provide moisture to dry skin as it also contains an emollient. Dimethicone (silicone) in Amerigel® Care Lotion contains zinc oxide to help protect fragile skin and minimize stinging and redness and is well tolerated by sensitive skin.
  • Use a barrier-repair product.  In addition to applying a moisturizer, applying a barrier-repair product such as Amerigel® Barrier Lotion.  As a barrier lotion, it does not penetrate the outer layer of skin but is an invisible skin protectant that can help diminish rosacea secondary to the emollient that acts to soften and coat the skin to stop water loss.  The dimethicone (silicone) in Amerigel® Barrier Lotion helps protect the skin and minimize stinging and redness.  It is recommended that the barrier lotion be applied to affected skin twice a day.
  • Wear sunscreen.  Choose a sunscreen to protect the skin from UVA/UVB sun exposure which can cause rosacea to flare.  Make sure that the ingredients contained in the sunscreen are not irritating to the fragile facial skin.  It should be alcohol and fragrance free.
  • Choose cosmetics with care.  Cosmetics can irritate fragile skin and increase irritation and redness.  Choose light foundations containing silicone (for skin-barrier protection) or use a product such as Amerigel® Barrier Lotion containing dimethicone (silicone) underneath the foundation.  It is also appropriate to use a foundation containing a broad-spectrum sunscreen for protection against UVA and UVB rays if it is recommended for fragile skin.  Avoid make-up that cannot be removed with gentle soap and lukewarm water.
  • Select soft fabrics in caring for fragile skin. Skin-care materials should involve the use of soft natural absorbent materials like cotton that cause little or no skin irritation.  A soft cotton towel may be used to gently pat the skin dry after cleansing.  Wearing clothing that can irritate the skin such as wool or scratchy fabrics near or around the face should be avoided, especially if they will be worn for long periods of time.
  • Avoid the urge to scratch. Rubbing, scrubbing or scratching the skin can make rosacea worse. Use a therapeutic moisturizer like Amerigel® Care Lotion that contains an anti-itch (antipruritic) ingredient and can be applied as needed to take away the urge to scratch. Applying a cold compress to the irritated area can sometimes help temporarily relieve the itching and inflammation. Scratching irritated skin can cause tiny openings in the skin that when left unprotected can result in an infection.
  • Be pro-active in cold weather. Winter often brings cold dry air which can dry out the skin more than any other time of the year. It is especially beneficial to moisturize with Amerigel® Care Lotion during the winter months to prevent premature cracking or excessive drying out of the skin. Amerigel® Care Lotion also helps keep skin moisturized in climates that are naturally dry or have very low humidity regardless of the season.
